“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”(Proverbs 16:9).
Can you recall a time of expectation in your life? You waited and watched for that moment when your expectation would reach its fulfilment. Expectation can be a beautiful thing—it fills us with hope and dreams for the future. But unmet expectations can also bring disappointment, frustration, and doubt. During Advent, we are reminded of the balance between human expectations and God’s plans.
The people of Israel expected their Messiah to come as a mighty king, yet He came as a humble baby in a manger. Mary and Joseph likely expected a quiet birth in their hometown, but they found themselves in a stable far from home. God’s plans often differ from ours, yet His ways are always better.
Expectation becomes life-giving when we hold it loosely, trusting that God’s plans are unfolding perfectly, even when they don’t match our own. During this Advent season, let us release the weight of expectations that no longer serve us and open our hearts to the surprises God has in store.
Mental Health Moment
Unrealistic expectations can lead to stress and dissatisfaction. A helpful exercise is to identify your expectations and ask: “Are these realistic?” “Are they in my control?” Adjusting your expectations to align with reality doesn’t mean giving up on dreams—it means creating space for peace and acceptance.
Let’s Reflect
• What expectations in your life are causing stress or disappointment?
• How can you trust God to shape your journey in ways you didn’t expect?

Prayer
Lord, help me to trust You when life doesn’t go as I expect. Teach me to surrender my plans and embrace Your will with faith and joy. Free me from the burden of unmet expectations, and remind me that Your ways are always good. Amen.
