DAY 11: "Sadness" (Series: Advent Emotions)

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Sadness often feels out of place during a season filled with joy and celebration, doesn’t it? Yet, for many, Advent can be a time when grief and loss feel most profound. Whether it’s the absence of a loved one, unmet expectations, or lingering pain, sadness reminds us of our humanity and our need for God’s comfort.

The story of Advent itself acknowledges sadness and hope intertwined. The people of Israel waited in longing and sorrow for the promised Messiah. Rachel’s weeping in Matthew 2:18 echoes the grief of many, yet even in these moments, God’s presence was near, bringing light into the darkness.

Sadness doesn’t need to be avoided or dismissed. It can be a sacred space where God meets us, offering comfort and healing. In this season, we can honour our feelings of sadness while holding onto the hope that Christ’s birth brings—a reminder that God’s light shines even in our darkest moments.

Mental Health Moment

Sadness can be overwhelming, but expressing it in healthy ways can bring relief. Consider journaling your feelings, talking to a trusted friend or counselor, or creating a small ritual to honour your loss. Remember, it’s okay to feel sadness and joy at the same time—both are part of the healing journey.

Let’s Reflect

What sadness or grief are you carrying during this season?

• How can you invite God’s comfort and light into these places of your heart?

“Tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of a pure heart.”José N. Harris

Prayer

Lord, You see the sadness I carry in my heart. Thank You for being near to me in my sorrow and for offering Your comfort and peace. Help me to honour my grief while holding onto the hope You provide. Let Your light guide me through this season. Amen.
