DAY 7: "Anxiety" (Series: Advent Emotions)

Theme: Coping with worries, as Mary might have on her journey to Bethlehem.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Anxiety is a familiar companion to many of us, especially in seasons of uncertainty. As Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, how could they not have felt anxious? The road was long and uncertain, the future unknown. Where would they stay? What challenges would they face? Yet they continued forward, trusting in God’s provision.

Anxiety often stems from the unknown, yet it invites us to lean on God. Advent is a time to bring our worries to Him, remembering that He walks with us through every trial. His peace is not the absence of trouble but the assurance of His presence amid it.

When anxiety rises, pause and take a deep breath. Name your fears and give them to God, trusting Him to guide you, just as He guided Mary and Joseph on their journey.

Mental Health Moment

Anxiety can be overwhelming, but practical tools can help. Deep breathing, grounding exercises, or journaling can bring calm in the moment. Try this: Write down three things you’re grateful for each time anxiety arises. Gratitude shifts focus from fear to peace.

Let’s Reflect

What anxieties are weighing on you right now?

• How can you invite God into your moments of worry this week?

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.” Corrie Ten Boom

Prayer

Lord, when anxiety fills my heart, remind me of Your presence. Teach me to bring my worries to You and trust in Your peace. Help me to find stillness amid the chaos and strength in Your promises. Amen.
