50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed. (John 4:50) Bible Reading: John 4:43-54
“Your 6 week old son has an 8mm wide Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) – a hole in the heart –and is going to require open-heart surgery to rectify it”. This was the cold hard facts Samantha and I were forced to confront in 2016, concerning our youngest son. The next few weeks are a blurred flurry of hospital stays, doctor visits and medicinal dosages.
I know a father’s helplessness that the official in this account would have felt, watching on hopelessly as my baby struggled to breathe, carried off to face the biggest battle of his life on the operating table.
In that season, one can only but take Jesus at His Word, like the official did. One scans the memory verses learned as a child to find a nugget of hope; one seeks encouragement from the very sermons one preached over the years to encourage others.
When all other options were exhausted, the official took Jesus at His word; this pastor took Jesus at His word. In your season of darkness, will you do the same?
PRAYER
Lord, your word is a balm for my aching heart;
a soothing for my pain;
When the voices of others grow distant and silent,
please speak to me, again and again.
