Text: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (1 John 1:1)
Our text today starts with the words: “In the beginning... - the same opening words of the Bible (Genesis ) – in the beginning…” Genesis 1:1 says: “ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was[a] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
If we pause at the beginning of time, we find, there was a darkness/an emptiness/a nothingness that existed. So what does God do? He speaks a Word of creation into the darkness. What was the very first thing that God spoke into existence – “Let there be LIGHT!”
In our text today, John reminds us that way back in the beginning, Jesus Christ, the WORD of God, was present. He was the agent of creation – “3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3).
Just as way back in the beginning, God’s Word penetrated the darkness and nothingness that existed in order to bring light and life; so too did Jesus Christ, the LIVING WORD, enter a world of darkness and deadness, so that the light of life may shine forth!
“In Him was life!” The LIFE (zoa) being spoken of here is much more than physical life. It’s not speaking of mere existing. Not just a case of eating, drinking, breathing. The life being referred to here is ABUNDANT LIFE, ETERNAL LIFE! It is the life which God himself has, which is imparted to every believer in Jesus Christ.
It’s what Jesus was referring to, when He says in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.””
That’s what we are remembering once again this Advent & Christmas. The coming of the One Who would offer us who were dead in our trespasses and sin, this abundant and eternal life.
Pause and reflect:
Is there an area of barrenness and bareness in your life right now?
Will you ask the Saviour to speak His word of life into that situation right now?
PRAYER:
Creator God, there’s dearth and death
Barrenness and bareness exist
Please shine your light, speak your word
My feeble frame assist.
