"Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you more valuable than they are?" (Matthew 6:24).
As a family, Samantha, the boys and I enjoy, on occasion, going to the beach for supper - fish and chips. We often feed the birds afterwards with the crumbs and the scraps. (Although I must admit with our boys having the appetites that they do, there's not often many scraps left for the birds!)
Thinking about it at first, the thought would cross my minds that indeed that's what the birds deserve.
They deserve the scraps!
They deserve the leftovers.
They deserve the morsels.
After they don't sow or reap or gather into barns!
But then it's as though I got slapped through the face. The question popped into my spirit- "Who is feeding the birds?" V26 says “yet your heavenly Father feeds them!”
The Greek Word for "feeds" here is τρέφω, meaning: "to thicken/nourish/ to gorge/ to pamper."
God provides for the birds of the air in abundance!
Our Father is not a God of scraps!
He's not God of mere morsels
He's the God of "more than we are able to ask or imagine!"
He’s the God Who did not spare His Own Son to die for sinful, undeserving sinners!
I have never woken up in the morning to birds that are moaning and groaning with anxiety and concern. Instead a song of praise is heard. Ingrained in its little bird-brain; its natural basic instinct let's it know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the One Who has created it, will provide it's every need that day.
Dear friend, the passage asks: "Are you not of more value than they?"
He created you in His image- "Are you not of more value than they?"
He gave His Only Son to die for the forgiveness of your sins- "Are you not of more value than they?"
Father, Feeder of the birds of the air,
I doubt at times my value
Help me afresh, to remember the fact
That I am of great worth to You
