"Knowing is Growing"

Updated: Jan 30, 2018

5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!” (Psalm 119:5)

Bible Reading: Psalm 119:1-8

In our reading today, the Psalmist at first, emphasizes the blessedness that come with obeying the precepts of the Lord. However, as he looks into the mirror of God’s perfect law, he realises afresh that it’s not half-hearted devotion being required. Instead the call is for those “whose ways are blameless”; who seek the Lord with “all their heart” and do “no wrong”. Alas, friends, this is a tall order not only for the psalmist but for you and me, too. “Oh, that my way were steadfast” is a woeful cry we share with him!

Praise the Lord! There is hope! As one learns God’s “righteous laws”, growth takes place. Is perfection ever attained? No; at least not this side of heaven. Will the cry of woe emanate from our lips? Yes, each time we recognise our imperfections. However, this maturing takes place under the ever watchful eye and gracious guidance of a loving God Who promises never to leave us nor forsake us. Happy learning. Happy growing!

Prayer:

When we walk with the Lord,

In the light of His Word,

What a glory He sheds on our way;

  While we do His good will,

  He abides with us still,

And with all who will trust and obey. (John H Sammis, 1887)
